TORONTO, Ont. – Saturday marks the official opening of Toronto’s first new publicly owned arena in 40 years.
The project to create the second ice pad at Leaside Gardens Arena – located on Millwood at Laird – has been in the works for a decade.
“The community endured and we accomplished what we needed to do,” board chair Raymond White said. “But not the least of which was a capital campaign that the city required us to raise $2.5-million to get this accomplished, so that was done and surpassed.”
Prime Minister Stephen Harper – who played at the original Leaside Arena as a young boy – donated $1,000 to the project.
The new rink opens with a public skate Saturday morning at 10:00.
